Learning aims:

By the end of this period, the students will:

1. obtain a clear understanding of how dodos and dinosaurs become extinct;

2. increase their ability to understand details and obtain effective information during reading and listening;

3. realize the importance and urgency of animal protection and establish a sense of harmony with nature.

Step 1 Lead-in

1. Have you ever noticed the birds flying in and around our school?  Can you name some?

Step 2 Listening

Task I   Listen for the main idea.

What is the best title for the passage?

A. The Friendship Between the Dodo and Man

B. The Reason for the Dodo’s Disappearance

C. The Rescue from Other Birds and Animals

D. The Foolishness of the Dodo

Task II   Listen and fill in the blanks.

One day a new ________ came to my island. His name was Man, and at first we seemed to be good friends. We went everywhere together and I _________my food with him. Step 3 Reading

Task I  Exchange ideas in groups of four for a whole passage. 4人一组、小组合作)

Many animals have disappeared during the long history of the earth.  1   They lived on the earth tens of millions of years ago, long before humans came into being and their future seemed secure at that time.  2   The eggs of twenty-five species have been found in Xixia County, Nanyang, Henan Province. Not long ago a rare new species of bird-like dinosaur was discovered in Chaoyang County, Liaoning Province. When scientists inspected the bones, they were surprised to find that these dinosaurs could not only run like the others but also climb trees.    3  

Dinosaurs died out suddenly about 65 million years ago. Some scientists think it came after an unexpected incident when a huge rock from space hit the earth and put too much dust into the air.  4  Nobody knows for sure why and how dinosaurs disappeared from the earth in such a short time.

We know many other wild plants, animals, insects and birds have died out more recently.   5   The dodo is one of them. It lived on the Island of Mauritius and was a very friendly animal.

A. According to a UN report, some 844 animals and plants have disappeared in the last 500 years.

Step 3 Poster making(海报制作)4人一组、小组合作)

Work in groups of four and make a poster on what we should do as senior school students to protect wildlife.

Overdevelop(过度开发)   leave them alone(不干涉)  protect the river and forest

reduce the water project(减少水利工程)  Don’t develop economy at the price of the environment.  Avoid the blind human activities.

Step 4 Assignments

Write a letter to WWF based on what you have discussed and the contents of your poster.
