Getting to know and understanding Modal Verbs

Learning Goals:

1. Students are able to know the basic usages, functions and meanings of common modal verbs;

2. Students can use the common modal verbs in specific contexts;

3. Students can feel, experience and appreciate common modal verbs in modern poems.

Teaching Procedures:

Step One   Warming-up

1. Friends must part.            

2. “If winter comes, can spring be far behind ? ”---- Ode to the West Wind

3. A fox may grow old, but never good.

4. If you flower, butterflies will visit you without being invited.

 

Step Two   Lead-in  Some pictures to show the functions and meanings of Modal Verbs.

(can; could, may might, shall, should, will ,would, need, dare, have to, ought to, had better etc.)

Step Three  Practice     

Please choose the correct answer from each bracket to complete the sentences.

Step Five   Write and act    Complete a dialogue by using modal verbs properly if possible.

Step Six    Appreciation
